Keep Your Tongue Moist with Dhikr

One of the simplest yet most powerful acts of worship is dhikr (remembrance of Allah). It requires no effort, no special time, and no specific place—yet its rewards are immense.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“Keep your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allah.”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3375)

This hadith is a reminder to constantly engage in dhikr, whether we are standing, sitting, walking, or even lying down. The more we remember Allah, the closer we get to Him and the more purified our hearts become.

The Power of Simple Words

The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us short but powerful phrases of dhikr that bring immense rewards:

  • SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah)
  • Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah)
  • Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)
  • La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah)
  • Astaghfirullah (I seek Allah’s forgiveness)
  • and so on…

Why Dhikr is So Important

  1. It Softens the Heart: The more we remember Allah, the more conscious we become of Him in our daily lives.
  2. It Wipes Away Sins: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever says ‘SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi’ (Glory and praise be to Allah) a hundred times a day, his sins will be forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea.” (Bukhari 6405, Muslim 2691)
  3. It Brings Peace and Tranquility: Allah says in the Qur’an: “Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (Qur’an 13:28)
  4. It is Light on the Tongue, Heavy on the Scale: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Two words are light on the tongue, heavy on the Scale, and beloved to the Most Merciful: ‘SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi, SubhanAllahil Azeem’ (Glory and praise be to Allah, Glory be to Allah the Almighty).” (Bukhari 6682, Muslim 2694)

How to Make Dhikr a Daily Habit

  • Say dhikr while doing daily activities—walking, cooking, commuting, or even before sleeping.
  • Make it a habit after prayers—the Prophet (ﷺ) recommended saying SubhanAllah (33x), Alhamdulillah (33x), and Allahu Akbar (34x) after Salah.
  • Increase in Istighfar (seeking forgiveness)—the Prophet (ﷺ) sought forgiveness more than 70 times daily (Bukhari 6307).
  • Use the blessed nights of Ramadan—the best time to remember Allah is in the peaceful moments of the night.

Keep Your Heart Alive with Dhikr

Ramadan is the best time to train our hearts and tongues to be in constant remembrance of Allah. Let’s not waste our moments—every SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar we say brings barakah, peace, and rewards.

May Allah make us among those who remember Him abundantly and grant us hearts that are always connected to Him. Ameen.
