Fasting and the Qur’an: Your Companions and Intercessors on the Day of Judgment

As Ramadan draws closer to its end, we are reminded of the great rewards that fasting and the Qur’an bring—not just in this world, but in the Hereafter as well.

‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“Fasting and the Qur’an will intercede for a person on the Day of Resurrection. Fasting will say, ‘O Lord, I deprived him of food and desires during the day, so let me intercede for him.’ And the Qur’an will say: ‘I deprived him of sleep during the night, so let me intercede for him.’ So they will both be allowed to intercede.”
(Narrated by Ahmad, 6589)

How Will Fasting and the Qur’an Intercede for Us?

  1. Fasting Will Speak for Us
    • It will testify to our obedience, patience, and sincerity in fulfilling Allah’s command.
    • It will remind Allah of our struggles and sacrifices, seeking His mercy on our behalf.
  2. The Qur’an Will Defend Us
    • If we spent nights reciting, listening, or reflecting on the Qur’an, it will speak in our favor.
    • It will testify that we prioritized Allah’s words over sleep and comfort.
  3. A Special Honor on the Day of Judgment
    • On that terrifying day, when people will seek intercession, fasting and the Qur’an will stand for those who observed them sincerely.
    • What greater honor than having these two powerful acts of worship plead for our forgiveness and entrance into Jannah?

How Can We Strengthen These Intercessors?

  • Fast with sincerity, not just from food, but from sins and distractions.
  • Recite and engage with the Qur’an daily—read its meaning, reflect, and act upon it.
  • Pray at night (Qiyam and Tahajjud)—even if it’s just a few rak’ahs.
  • Make the Qur’an a lifelong companion beyond Ramadan.

Make Ramadan Count

The days of Ramadan are passing quickly, but our efforts will not be wasted. Every fast and every verse of the Qur’an is a step toward earning Allah’s mercy.

May Allah accept our fasting and Qur’an recitation, and may they intercede for us on the Day of Judgment. Ameen.
