The Virtue of Performing ‘Umrah During Ramadan

Ramadan is a month filled with immense blessings and multiplied rewards. Among the greatest opportunities in this sacred month is performing ‘Umrah, which the Prophet (ﷺ) described as carrying the reward of Hajj.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to a woman from among the Ansar:

“When it is Ramadan, perform ‘Umrah then, for ‘Umrah during it is equivalent to Hajj.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1171a)

How is ‘Umrah in Ramadan Like Hajj?

  1. A Reward Equal to Hajj
    • While it does not replace the obligation of Hajj, an accepted ‘Umrah in Ramadan earns the reward as if one had performed Hajj.
    • It is an incredible mercy and blessing from Allah, especially for those unable to go for Hajj.
  2. A Time for Spiritual Renewal
    • Visiting the House of Allah in Ramadan multiplies the impact of worship and du’a.
    • It allows believers to experience deep connection, purification, and closeness to Allah.
  3. Forgiveness and Blessings
    • Performing ‘Umrah wipes away sins and grants a fresh start.
    • The spiritual atmosphere of Makkah, combined with the blessings of Ramadan, makes it a powerful act of devotion.

What If You Can’t Perform ‘Umrah?

Not everyone has the means to travel, but the rewards of Ramadan are still vast. You can:

  • Increase in worship—fasting, Qur’an recitation, and extra prayers.
  • Give in charity, as rewards are multiplied in this month.
  • Seek Laylatul Qadr, which is better than a thousand months.
  • Make sincere du’a, asking Allah to bless you with the chance to perform ‘Umrah in the future.

Maximize Ramadan’s Rewards

Even if we are far from Makkah, our hearts can remain attached to the sacred places through our worship and sincerity. Let’s use this month to seek Allah’s pleasure, forgiveness, and countless blessings.

May Allah grant us the opportunity to visit His sacred house, accept our efforts, and reward us abundantly. Ameen.
