Purify Your Fast with Zakat al-Fitr
As Ramadan nears its end, we are reminded of an essential act of worship that completes our fasting: Zakat al-Fitr. This special charity is not just an obligation but a means of purification for those who fast.
Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) reported:
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) enjoined Zakat al-Fitr as a purification for the fasting person from idle and obscene speech, and to feed the poor.”
(Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawood 1609 – Classed as Hassan by Al-Albāni)
Why is Zakat al-Fitr Important?
1️⃣ It Purifies Our Fasts – Throughout Ramadan, we may have engaged in idle talk or small misdeeds. Zakat al-Fitr cleanses these shortcomings, ensuring that our fasts are accepted.
2️⃣ It Supports the Needy – Ramadan is a time of generosity, and Zakat al-Fitr allows us to help the poor celebrate Eid with dignity.
3️⃣ It’s an Obligation – The Prophet (ﷺ) made it compulsory for every Muslim, young or old, male or female, to give Zakat al-Fitr before Eid prayer.
How and When to Give It?
✅ It must be given before Eid Salah to fulfill its purpose.
✅ It should be in the form of staple food (e.g., rice, wheat, dates, etc.) or its equivalent value in money if necessary.
✅ The amount is approximately one Sa’ (about 2.5–3 kg) of food per person in the household.
A Final Opportunity for Blessings
As we enter the last days of Ramadan, let’s seize this golden opportunity to purify our fasts and bring joy to those in need. May Allah accept our fasting, prayers, and charity. Ameen.
